Walter James McKendrick, age 90, of Painted Post, New York passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Guthrie Corning Hospital. Born on March 15, 1932, in Eldred, PA to LeRoy and Katherine McKendrick, he married Imogene McKendrick (Harmon) on October 20, 1956 and was a veteran in the US Army. Walter earned a BS in Education at Mansfield University and a Masters Degree from Vanderbilt University. He was employed by the Corning-Painted Post School District as a science teacher for 30 years, retiring in 1986, and an active member of the United Church of Painted Post.

In his free time, Walter enjoyed gardening, home improvement projects, attending antique car shows and furniture re-finishing. He was a member and former Grand Exalted Ruler of the Corning Elks. Walter donated his time monthly, working in the local food pantry.

Walter is survived by his wife, Imogene; three children: Nancy Garraffa of Bethlehem, PA, W. Jay (Suzi) McKendrick of Charlotte, NC, William McKendrick of Painted Post; four grandchildren: Katherine McKendrick of Charlotte, NC, Jacob McKendrick of Painted Post, Elias and Matthew McKendrick of Painted Post.

Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 1:00pm-2:00pm. A memorial service will immediately follow.
