Thelma Jane Root, age 95, passed away at home on September 16, 2023. Thelma was born February 7, 1928 in Jasper, NY the third of six children of Martin J. and Anna M. Griffin. She graduated from Painted Post High School in 1946 and two years later married her life long true love, John W. Root. They were together for 75 years.
During her career with the Corning Glass Works she enjoyed bowling with her many friends from work, and hosting summer parties at their cottage on Seneca Lake. As a member of the Barons of Steuben Drum Corps auxiliary she worked tirelessly for many years in support of boys and girls from the Corning area. She was also a devoted daughter to her parents and took care of both of them in their later years. After her retirement from CGW with 37 years of service, she and John traveled extensively around the country, even making a trip to Alaska. In her later years she enjoyed embroidery with her daughter-in-law, as they were both members of the Embroiders Guild of America.
Including her parents, Thelma is pre-deceased by three of her sisters and two brothers: Isabelle, Marian, Maxine, Wesley, and Duane. She is survived by her only son, David Root of Odessa, her youngest sister, Anna Marie Cox of Addison; niece Teresa Riggle of Bellefonte, PA; and many other nieces and nephews.
An informal graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at the family plot in Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats at 2:00 pm, Pastor Gail Wilson officiating. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Thelma through donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the local SPCA.
