Obituary for Richard E. 'Dick' Swan

Richard E. 'Dick' Swan, age 81 of Bath, NY passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Steuben Centers.

Born on September 11, 1941 in Corning, NY, he was the son of the late Donald Swan and Kathryn (Gee) Sereno. Dick was a graduate of Painted Post High School, class of 1959 and went on to graduate from the State Police Academy. Dick served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1964-1970. He married Betty Wheaton on June 24, 1967 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Corning. He worked as a state trooper for the NYS Police out of Painted Post and later as the Troop Safety Officer out of Canandaigua, retiring in 1989. In addition, he worked as a defensive driving instructor for over 30 years.

Dick will be remembered for his love of softball - playing up until last year, competing in the World Senior Games in Utah. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball and coached little league and small fry football. He also enjoyed deer hunting. Dick was a talented carpenter who loved working around his home and the farm helping to build and work on various projects.

Dick is survived by his wife, Betty Swan of Bath; children: Richard W. (Ashley) Swan of Bath, NY, Dean (Gretchen) Swan of Bath, NY; grandchildren: Alexis, Grayson (Alexis), Madison, Adam, Owen and Levi; brother, Jeffrey (Tina) Swan of Lindley, NY, Larry (Karen) Swan of Lindley, NY; sister, Candy (Tony) Cavallaro of Campbell, NY; special nephew, Richard (Kimberlee) VanGorden and many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his step-father, Leo Sereno; step-mother, Corinne Swan; his brothers: Roger Swan, Barry (Regina) Swan; and sister, Myra Hendrickson.

Family and friends are invited to visitation on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM and 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will be held at Phillips Funeral Home on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Burial with full military honors will follow in the family plot in Presho Cemetery, Lindley.
