Obituary for Richard "Dick" K. Peelle

Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, Richard K. Peelle, age 96, of Corning, New York, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Brookdale Painted Post Senior Living.

Richard will be missed by his sister, Janet Ewing; his children Karen (Allen) Fusco, John T. (Lyn) Peelle, Catherine (Ricky) Lathrop, Linda Hunter, and Susan Murphy; grandchildren Melanie (Becket) Anastasio, Daniel Velie, Brian (Katherine) Velie, Amy (Matt) Clarkson, Anthony (Courtney) Fusco, Harland (Jennifer) Peelle, Trent (Ashley) Peelle, Felicity (David) Laudato, Cecilia (Derek) Riffle, Adelle (Richie) Leise, Ian (Denise) Lathrop, Carly (Bryan) Haney, Sean Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Samuel Hunter; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; and his lifelong friend, Bob (Mona) Behrens.

He is predeceased by his wife of sixty-seven years, Rosemary Tuttle, and his brother, Lloyd Peelle.

A true Renaissance Man, Richard, the son of John Peelle and Margaret Wilson, was born on April 30th, 1926, in Jamaica, Queens. After serving his country in the United States Navy, Richard obtained a Bachelor's degree from Cornell University, then earned his Master's in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. During his time in Indiana, Richard cared for his family and nurtured his love of nature, cultivating land, raising horses, and breeding dogs – all while engineering the Peelle Elevator, an influential invention which remains operational in buildings throughout the country.

A New Yorker, Richard was not long for the Midwest. When Corning Inc. identified and recruited Richard as an engineer, offering to move Richard, his family, dogs, and favorite horse, Jabal, to the region, he accepted the position. He remained with Corning Glass for forty-five years, working both locally and internationally.

Back home, Richard pursued his life’s many passions. An avid woodworker, vintner, and marksman, Richard established his own vineyard; worked from “Pop’s Shop” designing and crafting clocks for each of his children & grandchildren; “dominated” family and friends on the shooting range; and went jogging every morning well through his eighties. A lover of limericks, logic, pi and laughs, nothing compares with that which he felt for his “Dearest Darlingest” Rosemary, the beloved wife for whom he bestowed a gift every year on his birthday.

While those fortunate enough to know Richard will always remember his sharp wit and skilled hands, it is his warm heart and gentle spirit that will forever live on in the souls and memories of those whose lives he profoundly touched. He never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed.

Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY on July 28, 2023 from 11:00am-Noon with a funeral service immediately following the conclusion of calling hours at Noon.
