Obituary for Julia and Floyd Divens

Julia (Judy) Louise Randall Divens, age 82, was surrounded by her loving family as she peacefully made her way to the heavenly dance floor to join her beloved husband Floyd on February 6, 2022.

Julia was born on July 19, 1939 to the late Bert and Katherine Randall and was one of eight children. Judy began working for Corning Glass Works in the order entry department immediately after graduating from Addison High School. Here she made many lifelong friends, one of which set her up on a blind date. This blind date became the love of her life, Floyd H. Divens. Judy and Floyd were married in August 1960. Their first home was in Addison, however they longed to live in the country and moved to Lindley with their three young daughters (the Divens Girls) in 1969.

Julia was a kind and gentle soul with an easy smile and a way that made everyone feel special. One of those ways was making sure everyone had a full belly - “Have you eaten? Did you get enough?” “Cup of soup?” “Here’s some money to go buy yourself something to eat.”

Julia enjoyed many different activities and hobbies over the years – cross stitch, ceramics, knitting, crocheting, snow-mobiling, RV trips with friends, gardening, canning, crossword and word search puzzles, watching games shows – Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune among many others. Bird watching, especially for the cardinal couples and hummingbirds, has been a favorite activity over the years.

Judy and Floyd loved to polka dance and their family lived watching them swirl around the dance floor.
Julia enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, learning how to keep score from her father. She had an amazing skill of watching ball games ‘through her eyelids’. Julia was an even bigger fan, if possible, of the Buffalo Bills. She watched every game eyes wide open with much enthusiasm that was shared. She and Floyd attended several home games in years past with family and friends, dressed to the hilt with Buffalo Bills clothing and setting up their tailgate pre-game party. They loved having family over to watch the games at home and having pizza parties for the games. Julia passed down this love of her sports teams/enjoyment of watching sports to several of her family members and was even able to teach/convert one or two of her aides to the joy of watching her baseball and football teams.
Judy’s favorite thing on earth to do was to love and support her family in any way she could. She loved holding her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on her lap, hugging them, reading to them and singing the special song she had for each of them. She did this until they became too big – well, let’s be honest even then once in a while a big kid would ‘sit’ on her lap to get some Nana loving.

She and Floyd went to every event they could for their children and grandchildren. They were the traveling concession stand for the Lindley-Caton Softball League the girls played in many years ago and were affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. Divy. They sat many a chilly and hot evening and afternoon at the stadium in Corning watching their children and then grandchildren performing in the marching band, cheerleading and playing football. Her greatest wish and joy was to see each of her family members living their best lives. She was so proud of and loved each one so very much (to the moon and back) and will continue to be everyone’s biggest fan.

Judy enjoyed over forty years at the family cottage boating, sailing, swimming, reading, playing cards, watching Yankee ball games, singing around the campfires and her favorite – fishing in her little dinghy boat.

Julia and family were blessed to have the services of CareFirst for the last year ensuring her and her family’s needs were met. Julia and her family were especially blessed to have several compassionate and loving home health aides who not only provided excellent care and companionship but also became like family.

Judy was pre-deceased by her loving husband of sixty years Floyd H. Divens, daughters Brenda Naylor and Michelle Divens, parents Bert and Katherine Randall, sisters Beverly Frost and Dorotha Fontana, brothers Bert Jr., James Randall and Ernie Randall as well as brothers, sisters and parents-in-laws.

Julia’s great love of life and family will be carried on by her surviving family - daughters: Kimberly J. Divens and Terri Divens-Bruffey; grandchildren: Miranda (Dylan) Miller, Lydia Bruffey, Reeder Bruffey and Joshua Naylor; great grandchildren: Judith and Rosemarie Miller; sister: Kay Horton; brother: Richard (Deb) Randall; sister-in-law: Eva (Robert) Graham as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family of Judy (Julia) and Floyd Divens are holding a Celebration of Life visitation at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 West Pulteney Street, Corning on Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 11:00am - 2:00pm. We invite those who knew and loved Judy (Julia) and Floyd to join us in the Celebration of Life honoring our beloved Mom and Dad/ Nana and Poppa.
