Obituary for John T. Swanson, Jr.
John T. Swanson, Jr. age 84 of Painted Post, NY passed away on Friday, January 27, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on February 17, 1938 in Corning, NY, he was the son of the late John Swanson, Sr. and Rachel (Sproule) Swanson-Church. John was a graduate of Corning Free Academy. After graduation, John joined the United States Navy, serving from 1958 to 1962 as a 3rd Class Electrician Mate. He married Brenda Ferris on February 2, 1979. They would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. John worked for the City of Corning Fire Department before beginning work as a security guard for Corning, Inc. for 38 years before his retirement. After retirement he drove for Brinks Security and as a school bus driver.
John will be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing. He enjoyed being outdoors, specifically going "up North" to his cabin in the Adirondacks. Brenda and John enjoyed yearly trips to the Thousand Islands and to Wheeling, WV to see the lights at Oglebay with their friends John and Sally Thompson. One of John's favorite pastimes was doing dishes. You could always find him at the Corning Moose Club or the Corning Legion doing dishes for the Auxiliary. For many years he played softball on various teams including the Moose Club and the Caton team. Anyone who knew John could always count on seeing a smile on his face. He was known to "talk your ear off" about hunting and his family. His absolute greatest joy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He could always be found at their many sporting events - their biggest fan.
John is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Brenda Swanson of Painted Post, NY; children: Jeff (Patty) Swanson of Caton, NY, Kim (Tim) LeBarron of Campbell, NY, Jodi (Sean) Eighmey of Painted Post, NY; grandchildren: Jeffrey (Jennifer) Swanson, Joshua (Erin Keegan) LeBarron, Jesse (Ashley) Swanson, Jesika (Josh) King, Brandon Parchesky, Jake Eighmey, Bailey Parchesky, Sydney Eighmey; great grandchildren: Summer, Makenna, Helena, Eliana, Lucas and Amelia Swanson, Gehrig and Raelyn King; mother of his children, Shirley Woodhouse Ross; several cousins, nieces and nephews and his Moose family.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his step-father, Patrick Church; father and mother-in-law: Hilton and Bernice Ferris; and best friend, Dean Walker.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Corning Moose Lodge 274, 96 Victory Hwy, Painted Post, NY from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
