Obituary for Jocelyn Lalonde Ober

Jocelyn Lalonde Ober passed away peacefully on April 9, 2022 after a short bout of pneumonia. She was 89.

Born on November 13, 1932 in Corning, NY, she was the daughter of Joseph and Evelyn (Hawkes) Lalonde. She was a graduate of Corning Free Academy and attended Keuka College.

Jocelyn left Corning upon her marriage to William Edwin Ober in 1956. Their cross country move to California, where Bill was stationed in the Navy, served as their honeymoon. Their life in California saw the birth of their daughter, Vicki Lynn Ober. The sudden death of her husband Bill in 1958 due to a Naval accident resulted in Jocelyn's return to Corning to live with her parents. A year later, she moved with her daughter Vicki to be near her sister in Dallas, Texas.

After being widowed at such a young age, Jocelyn entered the workforce as a secretary while raising her daughter. She played the role of both mother and father in a time when that wasn't common and she sometimes struggled to balance a home life with a work and social life.

Jocelyn relocated to Louisville, KY in 1981, shortly after her daughter married, to accept a new job opportunity. A few years later in 1989, she moved to Richmond, VA to once again be near her sister, Nini and brother Townsend.

Throughout her life, Jocelyn was a voracious reader and was rarely found without a book or magazine in hand. She also loved to garden and was quite proud of her hostas. Often, she could be found sitting out on her red bricked patio reading and enjoying the sun. In her later years when she retired, she led a very simple and quiet life.

Age and memory issues forced another move in 2019, this time to be with her daughter once more in Texas.

Jocelyn in survived by her daughter, Vicki Lynn Rosentraub (Michael); brother, Townsend Hawkes Lalonde; sister, Irene "Nini" Frey (Peter); granddaughter, Erica Shapiro (Murray); grandson, Phil Rosentraub; and great grandchildren: Noah and Lily Shapiro; as well as a niece and a nephew.

Jocelyn was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Evelyn Lalonde and her husband, Willian Edwin Ober.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
