Obituary for Ellen P. Carver (Purcell)

Ellen P. Carver, 83, of Big Flats, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. She was born on April 19, 1938 in Corning, NY, the daughter of Justin V. Purcell and Alice (McAvoy) Purcell. She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Carver who passed away on November 26, 1994. They were married in New York City in 1968.

A graduate of the University of Rochester, Ellen worked as a flight attendant for Mohawk Airlines in her younger years, and later served as a clerk at The Big Flats Library. Ellen was a voracious reader, an avid golfer and a lifelong member of Corning Country Club. Ellen was Women’s Club Champion there in 1973, 1975 and 1976 and the Florrie Keating Memorial Champion in 1982.

As the youngest of her four other siblings, she was a favorite of her nieces and nephews, who remember her as a beautiful, funny and fun-loving presence in their childhoods. She loved the hills of the Corning area, insisted this was God’s country and said she was grateful to call it home. She adored animals, especially dogs. Her loss will also be felt by many close friends around the country.

Ellen is survived by her brother, Thomas F. Purcell and several nieces and nephews. Ellen was predeceased by her brothers, Justin V. Purcell, Jr., and John E. Purcell, and her sister Mary “La” Wilson.

It was Ellen's wish that there be no services. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellen’s name may be sent to an animal shelter or library of your choice.
