Obituary for Augustus Myers Filbert

Dr. Augustus Myers Filbert, retired director of Corning, Inc., age 88 of Corning, New York, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania after a brief illness. He was born September 28,1933 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, son of Harry and Irene (Myers) Filbert. He was a graduate of Lehigh University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physical Chemistry. He served two years as a First Lieutenant and Captain in the U.S. Army Ordinance Corps at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland and at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Filbert joined Corning Glass Works as a glass composition chemist in 1961. Starting in 1965 and over the next fifteen years, he worked as a senior research chemist, supervisor, and manager in bio-organic technology at Sullivan Park. In 1980, he was appointed director of research and development and technical services where he served for the next seventeen years. He retired in 1997 only to remain with Corning, Inc. as a member of the steering committee for the company’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2001 and contributed to the publication of three books on the history of the company’s innovations. For more than a decade following his retirement, he served as a consultant to the Corning Archives and Record Management Group. Dr. Filbert was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Ceramic Society, Directors of Analytical Chemistry, American Management Association Research and Development Council. He also served on the Alfred State College of Technology Council.

Gus married Joy O’Keefe in 1963 and they enjoyed 58 years together in Corning, raising two sons, spending time with four grandchildren and traveling all around the world. He was preceded in death by his brother Harry E. Filbert Jr. Gus is survived by his wife Joy, his son David and his wife Marliese of Sicklerville, NJ, his son Mark and his wife Erika of Nazareth, PA, grandchildren Adam, Alex, Ethan, and Delaney, nephews James and Robert and great niece Haley.
